Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
