Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
